For Mark Helwig, illustration is all about telling a good story. Whether for a game, a book cover, or a private commission, Mark prefers to dive into the background of the characters or the scene to get just the right feeling for the piece. Conveying emotions and making the viewer feel something, be it horror, humor, or whimsy, is the spark that makes his illustrations effective.
Since entering the field of fantasy illustration in 2006, Mark has become a well-known artist guest and panelist at Cons throughout the Southeast. His awards are numerous, including Most Humorous in the Dragon*Con Art Show in 2009, 2010, and 2011 and Best Amazon in the Dragon*Con Art Show in 2010. The painting on the cover of this issue of Bulletin, Smug (Smaug's cousin, twice removed), was voted Best Dragon at the 25th Dragon*Con Art Show in 2011. Mark holds a Bachelor's degree from Kennesaw State University and is a member of the Association of Science Fiction and Fantasy Artists.
